Norton Internet Security is the best all round. It is now much quicker than it
was with a constant update.I think with the 3 you mention your thinking of
freeware.AVG is vastly overrated and a pain to get off when you find this out.Avast is heavy and is not secure enough to Trojans.Avira if you click
expert mode before setting it up is the best.Only problem with it is the first
update after putting it on takes a while.Go to File Hippo and click on them
and read the experts opinions.
You can them one at a time, and see which one you like. Or the one that performs the best on your hardware/configuration.
I suggest either, Avira or Avast:
– Avira has the better detection rate for a free product.
http://free-av.com/en/products/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html
– Avast has some extra features, but lacks in detection and some removal.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Along with that I suggest you use a Firewall preferably with HIPS (Host-based Intrusion Prevention System).
What I suggest, choose one:
– Comodo Firewall (Deselect AV & SafeSurf toolbar)
http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/
– Outpost Free
http://free.agnitum.com/
– Online Armor Free
http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html
Finally, I strongly recommend that you use a sandbox, for when you web-browser on the Internet:

All 3 are good programs. You can check at http://reviews.cnet.com/software/ and search for any software you like. You will see Editor and Consumer reviews – and read them yourself to determine if they fit your needs.
There is no one BEST program for everyone! Each person’s individual computer usage is completely different. Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior. Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.
Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.
Here is a list of free programs that do their job well, for various security tasks. Most of the time, several programs are necessary to maintain a full range of security/protection against viruses, trojans, worms, etc.
There is a safe site, with software reviews by both the editors and users at http://www.download.com Most of the following programs can be downloaded from there.
ANTI-VIRUS:
-AVG by Grisoft
-Avira
-Avast
Any *one* of these would probably work well for you! Read the reviews to be sure.
ANTI-SPYWARE:
Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100 percent accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need *at least* two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.
There are several excellent free ones:
-Spybot, Search and Destroy
-Ad-Aware
-Spyware Blaster
-Superantispyware
-Malwarebytes
FIREWALL:
-Comodo
-Online Armor
-SandBoxie
-Sunbelt Personal Firewall (formerly Kerio)
-Zone Alarm
GENERAL CLEANING:
-Ccleaner
HTH!

Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
Depending on your resources, I’d recommend something a tad stronger. Especially if you plan to go Freeware…outside Firewalls, Frewwware Security programs suck.
Sunbelt Systems is supposed to have an excellent lappie friendly AV Suite.
Personally, I use the 2009 ca AVS. It works very well. But, I can’t use it on my 2004 laptop…it’s processor and memory resources can’t handle it without significant lag – and a 4+ minute boot-up.
Good Luck!
Let’s see… there are three laptops here (sadly, I’m not using them, I’m just doing some stuff like updating it). My Windows Vista has McAfee and other stuff by Microsoft. My Windows XP MEdia Center Edition has Avast Home Edition. My Windows XP Home Edition has AVG 8.5 Internet Security. For me, all of them are working fine.
All of them have additionals like Windows Defender, Malwarebytes and Spyware Doctor.
When will you go back to school?
AVG is good, but little down in real time protection and AVAST scores at this point.
Try the link below to get a complete comparision of some of the popular antiviruses.

Norton Internet Security by Symantec, paired with Norton 360, works well for me. Norton 360 does everything seamlessly, and I’ve had no problems with blocked sites, etc. like I had with some other virus protection.
You also want adware protection, and the best free program for that is Ad-Aware by Lavasoft, which can be downloaded free from Lavasoft.com. Be careful using a search engine that you don’t accidently load Ad-ware, which is listed in some search results but which is NOT at all what you need; it can actually infect your computer.
Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition is available for free download at the present time. You merely update the definitions files periodically and run the software in the background at a time of your choosing to scan for infections – which you can review and decide for yourself whether you’d like to remove all of them.
To the linux guy!! If you think that there are no virus for linux you are sadly mistaken.
We found out, the hard way after installing kasperky for linux server, found out the linux servers was the source for network virus.!!
Anyway, I Use Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
But from your choices, I would recommend Avira Internet Security.
Avira, Kaspersky and ESET all have A+ Certification for catching and cleaning viruses on the last Q1 of 2009.
i use AVG free and so far so good
I actually just switched to Avast this week after my Norton expired. Although I have’nt been using it long it seems decent. Better than the Avg I had on my old laptop..
ad aware and advanced system care is also decent for freeware
kaspersky
Don’t Use Norton It Slows Your Computer Down By 60%.
Use AVS Or AVG
I have avast for my Windows partition
Then ClamAV (to scan Window’s partition) on my Ubuntu Linux partition.
None.
I use Linux.
comodo internet security……use any thing u want but remember to update it regularly.
AVG holmes FREE:)
norton from synaptic is better. it offers a wider range of utilities and protection. it can remember all of your passwords for every site you go to, and you just put one password into the norton password manager when you turn on the computer and you dont have to worry about your other passwords. it has online backup, phishing protection, anti virus, registry cleaner, disc defragger, and a pc tunup. on defualt it will do everything i mentioned every night that your laptop is OPEN (you cant shut the laptop or things you have programmed to happen at night wont happen) at around 3 am. you can change it if you use the computer at 3am and you dont want to lose the processing power from scanning.
