On this forum they say that the best one is Grisoft AVG (22% votes), there are pages of talk about pros and cons of many

it depends as well if you’re running Vista or something else, some – like Kaspersky – apparently slow the system down
if you put "anti-virus for Vista" in Google you’ll find a lot of info and reviews
Kaspersky Internet Security is the best
Do NOT get NORTON, it will eat at your hard drive, and they always want money for upgrades. AVG, AVIRA, AVAST are all free on net, I have a dell got it 8 months ago and have been running AVG, no problems. Best wishes.
For maximum virus protection, Norton Internet security is recommended.
Norton is one of the old company in security related with a high experience.
Personally I use Norton Internet security 2005
but the back-draw of Norton is slowing the PC, due to its high protection on each files and folder, in order to speed up the PC you can an check some deep protection to gain faster speed of OS performance.
So I recommend you to use Norton.
other recommended anti-virus is Kaspersky, and NOD32 (Faster then Norton)
NOD32 is light on the PC performance, and Kaspersky has a very good anti-virus protection too.
