You can uninstall the update as the following steps:
1. Click Start and click Control Panel.
2. In the left pane, select Control Panel Home.
3. In the Program section, click Uninstall a Program.
4. Select Avast 5.x and click the Uninstall button.
Have you enabled the "automatic update"? You can set up it in the security center under Control Panel. If the above method can’t work. You can try RegistryMum to fix the registry. Hope it can help you.
mine did that too.i went to this site and it fixed it
i know windows update has had issues with one of the recent updates (it was published 2/23/10) it was the one that had something to do with activation, but i am running windows 7 so it is probably listed differently for you, or might not be the same issue for vista.
if you have issues after an update you can go back and uninstall any updates from the date just prior to when the problem started (updates are not hard to uninstall, and its an easy way to trouble shoot)
to uninstall updates: you have to find add/remove programs (in vista: Control Panel – Programs – Programs and Features, click "View installed updates". Click the update that you want to remove, and then click Uninstall)
