Also, are there any good, free virus protection programs? If so, how do I get them? Thanks.

Whatever you do don’t use Norton it is a resource hogger and slows your computer down. Try AVAST that is very good
These are the best free ones http://www.basicspywaretips.com/freevirusremovaltool.html
It’s all a matter of preference. Some AV software can slow down your computer by using collossal amounts of memory (like Norton: this is also difficult to uninstall!) Others will use a minimum amount of memory but will give you adequate protection.

Im not sure about the free viruses or where to find them, but if you are looking to buy one then i recommend the Defender Pro 15-in-1. I bought mine at the local Wal-Mart for around $50. While the licence is only good for about 1 or so, it offers you full protection and it is constantly looking for upgrades for as long as your license is good. It evens offers protection to your cell phone in case you are involved in mobile chat.
I am using "Zone Alarm Virus Scan". It is light on my system (doesn’t slow it down), and it is protecting me well against viruses. Easy to update and to work with. However, I am afraid I cannot help you on Free Anti Virus Software! Good Luck!
Free downloads type Microsoft Corporation Defender beta 2. It will run in the backround doesnt us memory kills all none living viruses
AVG is the best because it doesnt take up much space and it wont cause your computer to run slower. Go to http://www.free.grisoft.com/ for all security needs.
Norton systemworks is the best. But spysweeper with anti-virus is closing in as the best. I’ve used them all, even free stuff. There is no good free anti-virus software. That’s why they are free. They can’t even compare to noton systemworks or spysweeper.
