There’s a number of programs running on my pc that I believe are junk. I just want the essentials to run. How do I define what’s what. Is there a program that will fix this for me?

What you could do is go into add/remove programs and deleate the ones that you KNOW what they are, and you dont use anymore; like old games, or picture editing programs, etc. Then what you can do is go into windows>>accessories>>system tools>> then disk cleanup. If you are most worried about space, I would go back to system tools and use disk defragmentation. Thats the best way to clean up your computer without damaging anything.
i can tell you a quick fix:
1. press win-key + r
2. type in msconfig and press enter
3. select diagnostic startup from the dialog box that appears
4 .press apply and ok then restart.
This will load basic devices and services only. To undo it repeat steps 1 and 2 and select normal startup.
Or you can go to startup tab in msconfig and select what you want to run at startup
Note: this is not a great idea as some services like autio services can be disabled.
you cant really define programs with another program, you need to know what it does and if its useful to you, when you find there isnt a use to you, you go to start > control panel > add and remove(assuming youre using windows xp or vista)
you have to pick out and uninstall the programs you dont need or want.
There are many free programs that do the trick. When people ask me to fix their computers, I usually put three things on them before I give them to them again. They are:
1. Avast Antivirus- This cleans up a bunch of viruses on your system, and in tests performs better than the popular AVG. I highly recommend Avast. http://www.avast.com
2. The second is CCleaner. This cleans up everything in your trash, internet history, cache and more. Even cleans up stuff left over that cleaning the cache in IE or Firefox leaves behind. http://www.ccleaner.com
3. Firefox Web Browser:
…Much more secure than IE, Firefox is a fast and safe browser. You probably already have it… http://www.mozilla.com
If you are not sure what program does what, then you need to determine that first before you do anything else.
Make a list if you have to do that or at least try each program in your Start>Programs menu.
After you determine what you do not need, see if there is an uninstall available. Otherwise, you can go to the Control Panel and Add/Remove Programs and remove unwanted programs.
