Here is a good page for 10 ways in speeding up and maintanence of a pc, it really make a difference.

Spybot search and destroy
1) Keep minimal programs at start up/ backgroung programs
2) Close unwanted programs
3) Defragmenting
4) Delete temporary files regularly from disk
5) For Browser clear temp files & cookies
run free spyware cleaning software like Lavasoft Adware, Spybot Search&Destroy, and Microsoft Windows Defender. you can get them all at download.com. Defragment your hard drive after from one of the previous answers. reboot and see how it runs.
Press Ctrl+Shift+Del regularly, if you use firefox 1.5, to clear out the cache and history and stuff.
Defragment regularly
Dont keep unnecessary stuff on your computer
Use the windows classic theme if you’re using XP
Turn off system restore if you dont plan to use it ever
Use some other antivirus if you’re using Norton
a quick way is to run disk clean up every morning or before you use your computer to empty your temp files that take up space and so your computer down
1. speed up- add more ram, get rid of cluter, defragment you hard drive.
2. to clean it up, get ccleaner, free download, it will clean out all junk files, and
3. clean out old registry entries, uninstall programs you don’t use. that will help a lot
go to start, control panel, performance and maintanence, free up space on your hard disk. also go to rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster.
Reformat the hard drive reload the OS
defragmenting regularly would be a good idea.
start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter
i’m a big fan of the program ccleaner

In simple terms, clean up your Registry and get rid of all the junk/temp files your PC has accumulated. Don’t just download anything that purports to do so though, there is a lot of rubbish flying around. I recommend you use ‘Crap Cleaner’.
http://www.crapcleaner.com
After installation run ‘Issues’ which will delete all the redundant Registry entries. Once it has run and displays the faults it has found, it will give you the option to back up the entries you are about to delete, I would use that option until you become more familiar with Crap Cleaner. If anything then does go wrong, you can restore your Registry to the previous state.
Now run ‘Cleaner’ and get rid of all your useless files. These files accumulate naturally through normal OS procedures so don’t worry if you find a whole bucketfull on your first run!
Crap Cleaner is probably the best freebie Registry Utility around and it keeps getting better.
If you run this say, once a week you should notice a difference in your PC performance.
Have fun.
