Clean up deletes all the temporary crap floating around your computer, along with other unused stuff that might be left from uninstalled programs. Disk defragment physically moves the data closer together, or in a more logical pattern, on the disks metal surface to increase access time. Disk cleanup is pretty useless, and defragmenting should only really be done if you recently moved around very large files on your harddisk.
computer cleanup will remove temp files, like temp internet files, cookies, password files unutilised, and files in the recyclined bin, whereas disk defragment will lineup associated files in the right allocations in order to speedup the computer
The clean up removes temp and unnecessary files from the system.
Defrag attempts to make the files on the system contiguous. Microsoft will write files to the disk according to what space is available.
Search the web for a good definition of defrag. I recommend that average users do this at least once a month for routine system maint.
defrag moves files around on your hard drive from one place to another, so they are accessed faster, so the disk runs faster.
computer cleanup deletes or compresses files on your hard drive so you have more space to store more files.
Basically a disk clean up, cleans your hard disk up. Any unwanted files and programs are deleted from your hard drive thus freeing up space. A disk defrag is when your defragging programs removes fragmentation from your hard disk. Basically a hard disk is separated into sectors, when the disk spins the arm on the disk reads the data. It makes sense that files related to one program are in the same sector since the arm will have to move less to read the files. Fragmentation occurs when these files get separated into different sectors and thus slowing the read time of your hard disk because it takes longer for the arm to move. Disk fragmentation wont save hard disk space but will allow you to access files on your hard disk faster since it will move files into the proper sectors.
