Last and most likely final version is Windows XP Service Pack 3.

If you have 1GB RAM or could upgrade to that level, better consider Windows 7 Home version.

If you want to start fresh you need to do a fresh installation. You have to boot from installation disc, format then install. You will need to install the drivers after installing Win XP. Windows 7 has lots of newer and latest drivers. Only special drivers like that for wifi would typically be required.
