My computer won’t boot, it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. It will not give me the option for safe mode when holding F8. I’ve ran the diagnostics test fully and everything passes. So I assume it’s a software problem. I could reformat the computer but I don’t want to lose my data. Any ideas how to transfer the data if it comes down to it?

I have had this happen before(Dell Vostro 1500), I just took the battery out and put it back in and waited. Later, it worked normally my best guess to my problem was my computer was overloaded with information(gaming, downloading multiple large files) flowing through and just went to this page and refused to start.
Try this but, if it still persists then yes a external hard drive would be a good idea for transferring.
Let me know if the first option works if not, E-mail me and I should have another idea.
See if you have a floppy disc in your floppy disc drive. My computer does the exact same thing if I leave a floppy in, and returns to normal starting mode when it is removed.
that’s a old unit i would reformat and save yourself the trouble of trying to solve ur problem and u need to tap f8 while it is booting not holding the button
buy an external harddrive and save evrything there. then reboot and reformat
