Hi Pat,
Slow computers can be caused by a low hard disk space.
Try to uninstall programs that you do not need.
Used the Disk Clean up utility from Window, to clean up your C drive.
After you have done that, get Ccleaner to clean up the system further and also your unused registry entry. You can get the program from here:
http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10767629.html?tag=lst-8
After using the Ccleaner. get Spyware terminator to cleanup any spyware and adware, and get rid all the pop up. Yo can get this program from
http://www.download.com/Spyware-Terminator/3000-8022_4-10741021.html?tag=lst-1
Next Step
1. Head over to your desktop and click "Start"
2. Then click right click on "My Computer"
3. Select Properties"
4. Select "Advanced" tab,
5. Then in the "Performance" tab section select "Settings"
6. Select "Adjust for best performance"
7. Then Hit “OK”
Next step get AVG antivirus from
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10761481.html?tag=lst-2
and install it on your system
Next get the latest window update to protect your system.
Now tweak your folder system:
1. Open "My Computer"
2. Click "Tools" and select "Folder Options"
3. Select the View tab
4. Uncheck/Check the Following
5. UNCHECK "Automatically search for network folders and
printers"
6. CHECK "Launch folder windows in a separate process"
7. CHECK "Do not cache thumbnails"
To speed up your shutdown and boot up time
If you disable these you could be sure no PC
performance is lost due to sounds.
1. Click START
2. Click SETTINGS
3. Click CONTROL PANEL
4. Click SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES
5. Click THE "SOUNDS" TAB
6. Under Sound Scheme Select "NO SOUNDS"
Delete unecessary stuff
(Files and Folder used to initially install windows and folders that collect junk)
Head over to the following folders and if there is anything in them delete it, if there is not its OK. If the folders don’t exist is ok too.
● Click Start
● Click Run
● Type in the following lines then press enter.
● Repeat for each.
● If you dont have one of the following folders ignore it and move on to the next.
● C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
● C:\windows\system32\dllcache\
● C:\Documents and Settings\user_name_here\Local
Settings\History
● C:\Documents and Settings\user_name_here\Local
Settings\Temporary
● C:\WINDOWS\Offline Web Pages
● C:\WINDOWS\Temp
● C:\Documents and Settings\user_name_here\UserData
● C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\OfflineCache
● C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile…
● C:\Program Files\CachemanXP\Backups
● C:\Documents and Settings\user_name_here\Cookies\index.da…
● C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\OfflineCache…
● C:\Documents and
Settings\user_name_here\UserData\index…
I hope this one will help you. There are many more steps to further improve your computer performance, but I think the above will be sufficient for now.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don’t always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven’t cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC’s resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Other great tip is increasing your virtual memory to simulate more RAM. This will give you a bit more resources for multiple program use or CPU heavy programs. Check the link to alter your virtual memory spec.
Hope this link helps. Shows you how to do everything step by step. You should get a least 60-120% more resources and speed
if you follow the tips.
download then update and then scajn-then repair. http://www.iobit.com this free tool will have your pc running a top speed again.run it every 2-3 days to keep junk files and registry errors clear. good luck.

pc’s are just fine if you install linux on them.. but anyways
go here and try running these scans
A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.
Run a virus scan weekly.
Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don’t have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus…
Run Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware weekly.
Download, update and run Spybot—http://www.safer-networking.org/…… . Don’t forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run SuperAntiSpyware—http://www.snapfiles.com/get/SuperAntiSpyware.html
Now to prevent spyware from being installed in the first place….
Download SpywareBlaster—http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html…
SpywareBlaster doesn’t scan and clean for spyware – it prevents it from ever being installed.
It’s main features include:
– Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
– Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
– Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Now lets clean up your registry.
Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.
Download RegScrubXP–http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d…
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it’s original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
Download CleanUp—http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea…
Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy – all in one easy solution. All for free!
Now lets clean up your disk.
Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.
Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.
Now lets tweak your connection.
If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it ever again.
There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.
Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.
http://www.download.com/SG-TCP-Optimizer/3000-2155_4-10488572.html
You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/
The second one is Cablenut.
Windows XP tested and approved
CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.
http://www.cablenut.com/
Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p…
All programs are FREE!
After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.

get out your wallet! (not free but u wont ever regret it)
even if it puts u in unbelievable debt
Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.
