Make sure your Widows software is up to date. Run "Windows Update" weekly. This is extremely important!

Make sure you upgrade it IE8 and enable the "SmartScreen Filter".. For security I prefer Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript add-ons.

If you want to be 100% safe from malware while surfing the web install Sandboxie. If will automatically set up to use your default browser. Per Sandboxie "Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer. " You can right click on any program icon to run it in Sandboxie,
In Sandbox settings:
Sandbox Settings > Delete > Invocations > Check "automatically delete contents of sandbox"
(see video below)

Try Comodo Firewall/Anti-virus. It’s a completely free program. I’ve been using it for 2 years on both of my computers, never had virus issues with either.
The program itself has gotten some pretty good reviews from the press, too.
It’s less common than AVG, which is a good thing. As far as I know, there are little to no viruses written to get around it.
AVG, i use AVG and now I have a virus!!!! This virus which is a trojan turned off all my security now i cant delete it with any software. I cant even download a software and use it because it’s blocked by the virus now i got to reformat my computer. Overall go get AVG as well as MalwareBytes.

Use AVG free, it’s very popular and is a really good antivirus with lots of regular updates. I’ve been using it for years.
It’s always on and has caught lots of trojans the moment they appear on my computer, amongst several other small viruses it seems to have done its job very well!
I used to use Norton but AVG to me seems just as good.
