A free firewall
http://www.zonelarm.com put arrow on zonelarm products, click compare products to get to the free one.
malwarebytes is an anti-malware. You can see what it does. It can not work alone.
The others are anti viruses that give basic protection. You need a firewall to go along with one.

I have used Zone Alarm Firewall, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just changed to Avast antivirus and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
Listen to turnip…he knows what he’s talking about.
Right now, I’m using avast! and PC Tools free firewall. They seem to be working great together.
I have in the past used AVG, but when paired with Zone Alarm, I couldn’t do ANYTHING to access my wireless internet. So I switched to avast!. I have also used Avira, but I ran into so many false positives that I couldn’t leave it on my families computers without risking serious problems. I like Zone Alarm a lot, but it doesn’t work with Windows 7 (it may work with x86 now…), so I have been without up until recently when I found out that PC Tools firewall is compatible.
So that’s how I arrived at my current setup and why I recommend what I do.
Do this on-line scan first : http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
only if you might be worried that you could be infected now.
then go and get avast for full time protection,
you can not get a better anti virus system for free.
it has many features you will have to pay for in other systems.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
don’t forget to register or you will only have it for 60 days
by registering you will get a licence for a full year.
just re-register at the end of the year to get another one year licence.
if you feel you would be even safer with a software firewall
then
try this one it’s also free and it has no conflicts with avast
http://www.pctools.com/firewall/
if you dont like the look of avast then try Avira

Avast! Home Edition is good and offers pretty much everything a commercial AV does – If I was going the free road, it would be my personal choice. Some swear by Avira AntiVir Personal due to it’s high detection rate – but keep in mind that, a) it doesn’t include a web shield (also known as the ‘WebGuard’ and ‘AntiDrive-by’); b) it has been known to have a high false-positive rate; and c) it is known to suffer from update issues. Others swear by AVG Free – which although very popular, it really isn’t the greatest (it lacks anti-rootkit and a web shield; and respected independent tests have found it’s detection rate to be rather AVeraGe). Only choose one!

You should also get yourself a good strong firewall (to stop any personal data from ‘leaking’ into the wrong hands). Both Online Armor Free and Outpost Free are quite strong. OA is fairly user-friendly, but for the beginner/novice, Outpost Free is probably the better choice. Some swear by Comodo, but it is a pain-in-the-butt to use and is probably suited more for an experienced user (who has a fair bit of patience). All three are considered three of the best. Only choose one!

Download SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware for ‘back-up’. Neither of the free versions include real-time protection (meaning they won’t block/prevent infection) but do offer full scan and removal capabilities. Perform regular scans with both to double-check that nothing has slipped past your AV. As neither include r-t protection, it is safe to install both.

Another very important – and often overlooked – method of prevention is to ensure that all your programs are up-to-date with the latest version and patches. Malware writers target old, insecure programs – or more to the point, unpatched ‘holes’ in programs – as a way to get their crap onto a computer; every time you patch a program, you are ‘plugging a hole’ so to speak. Download Secunia PSI to help you keep updated – it is very good and is quite user-friendly.

It is also very important you keep your copy of Windows up-to-date. The easiest way to do this is to have ‘Automatic updates’ enabled (if you don’t already).
EDIT:
Wow. I was just looking at the latest matousec.com firewall leak test results and PC Tools Firewall currently scores a whopping 99%. While I have not used it myself personally, it appears to be a very good choice (provided it is easy enough to use). See the test results here:

if use Outlook 2000/2002 (XP) 2003/2007 or Outlook Express 5.5 or later,Windows Mail (32 bit) and Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0
use the kaspersky internet security 2010. It works awesome but is not free. but you can remain tension fre for 30 days. I had used the trial and there was no virus in my pc during the entire period i used. After thast i used avira antivirus free edition and after one week i needed to format my pc. Some virus had damaged the win 32 services.
After getting the new window installe3e i asked the technician to install kis 2010 again and now i am tension free for the other 5 days
Nowadays,a single antivirus is not enough. To help protect your computer, you minimum need an antivirus and a firewall. For antivirus protection,I suggest AVG.For firewall protection,I suggest ZoneAlarm.Avoid using Internet Explorer. It is the world’s most popular browser and is therefore subject to attacks.Use Firefox instead. There is also a free good cleaning tool called Ccleaner. It gets rid of junk files on your PC allowing it to run smoother and faster. They are all free for personal use and will not slow down your PC.The links are given below. But remember the best security is you yourself.Do not visit or download from unknown sites and open unknown emails with attachments. Also make sure your Windows Updates are turned ON.
Try any one of these…they all are free…

Microsoft Security Essentials works awesome, but I don’t think you can get it for now…you could try Comodo, thats what I’m currently using, its an anti-virus and firewall program.
Well as usual. Everybody pushes Avast or AVG. But no one ever tells the questioner the down fall of the AV there asking about. Simply, Avast has no heuristic scanning ability in the free version. So that means a whole slew of bad stuff can get right by it and not be detected. Which makes that boot time scanner that everyone is so gaga about worthless.
Personally, I would rather have a few faults positives than a infected computer. Avira is the way to go. It’s all in how you set it up. I used Avira for almost a year. Never had a problem with faults positives. But then again i keep my computer cleaner than most people do. This computer is almost 3 years old now and hasn’t slowed down one lick yet.
