Most antivirus programs can be turned off, the problem is finding the right options or settings menu to turn them off.
All of them can be shut off. However, my wife has no problem maintaining at least 40fps on WoW with Norton AV running, so I don’t think your problem is the AV program. (You don’t want it scanning files while you’re playing though.)
Avg can, it is easy to just right click on the tray icon, click exit, an it is completely shut off. download at http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition?cmpid=fr_bn_free_670
You can do this with any Anti-Virus. most of them either have a disable option in the user interface or an exit which would shut it completely down until you either restart your computer or reactivate it.
PS. don’t download AVG it has the lowest detection rating out of all the free AV’s . Avira is the best with the highest detection rating. Download Avira from here and also read the reviews > http://download.cnet.com/Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10322935.html?tag=mncol
