I’m a bit nervous about using such ‘cleanup’ optimization applications.
Should I use such utilities or just leave well enough alone!
Would welcome some guidance please.

CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com ) is probably the best free cleaner… however, it doesn’t have any backup facility. So if you’re nervous about it ruining your PC, you’ve got no way to protect yourself against any problems that might occur from it.
I used to use CCleaner but now I use a tool called RegAce after my computer got ruined. RegAce costs around $30 but is a sound investment beause the computer store charged me like $80 to fix my broken PC after CCleaner ruined it 🙁
You must be very careful about cleaning up your Registry! If you don’t know your way around the registry, you can do yourself great harm! You can back up your registry, but what’s to say that you allow a registry file to be deleted by your registry freeware and then find out the deleted registry file also had something to do with running a backup! BIG problems then! It can happen. The registry cleaners that are "safe", also don’t really do too much for you. The registry cleaners that are aggressive, are also the ones that can render your system useless if the wrong file is deleted, and you can’t get it back! The only solution then is a system recovery! If you want to use a registry cleaner, then make sure you backup both your personal files and the registry weekly, just in case! Good luck!
I use CCleaner to clean my registry. So far, my computer is still functioning as it should be. The registry contains sensitive data about your computer and thus, it is recommended that you back it up first before doing any changes on it. It will help you to easily restore your registry to its previous state if ever your computer suddenly acts weird after cleaning your registry. Luke Lucario has already given you the link to CCleaner’s websites. ^^

ccleaner is probably the safest one out there it has never let me down .
Leave them alone. They are the homeopathy of the computer world, at best they do nothing useful.
