Sometimes, if I want to get out of a web-site, about:blank shows up and it takes forever to get me back to my home page. What do I need to do? Or…Is there anything to do?

Check if your homepage isn’t correct and not changed by any other malicious software time to time.
If such is the case, uninstall the searchbar or any other BHO on the IE. Also, manually delete their respective folders.
Make a thorough scan for viruses(with updated definitions), spywares etc, then reinstall the BHOs again.
If for a good scan, the problem would definitely get solved else delete all Temporary Internet Folders and retry.
However, ‘about:blank’ comes only when no other destination is been provided and checked for correctness.
The simplest thing that one does is install a newer IE for windows. But then you loose internet settings and other such data.
if yr homepage is not about:blank……then i guess u need or get a newer version of internet explorer or i guess u might have a virus.
From what you are saying it sound like your browser may have been hijacked. Get yourself a copy of Hijack this! run a scan and post to one of the many hijack forums on the internet, someone will advise you what to delete. Following on get a free copy of spyware blaster. This gives pretty good protection to prevent your browser being hijacked again, in addition to restricting certain bad websites.
