I have to turn my computer on and off at least a half dozen times before I can get to my desktop. Usually about 3 times before I get the screen telling me that windows was shut down abnormally and giving me several other starting options. At this point, I choose safe mode and sometimes it frreezes midway through loading the drivers and always freezes after loading all the drivers.
With every cycle, the process goes just a little farther with safe mode finally loading or sometimes, I try to let windows start normally with that working as well.
No matter what, whenever I get to a point where I can restart the computer, it's fine from there on. Never any problem on restart. Might I be experiencing some sort of hardware failure?

Does your computer meet or exceed XP's minimum requirements?
Take the ram out and clean it with rubber
MOST LIKELY YOU HAVE AN OLD COMPUTER! THATS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY OLD COMPUTER! I TRIED TO UPGRADE FROM 98 TO XP BUT WOULDNT SUPPORT IT!
It could be your hard drive. I have had computers that didn't indicate anything was wrong with the hard drive, except that it would have trouble booting up. If it has trouble getting past a certain point it could be a sector on the hard drive is on its way out.
