It sounds suspiciously like a hardware problem to me. If you’re getting the freezes randomly (I.E NOT with a particular program), then it could be a memory issue.,
What I’d do is this…
1) Start in "Safe Mode" and use the PC as normally as possible whilst in this mode. This will prevent any drivers or software loading on Windows that it doesn’t require to run and will give you a good indication of whether the problem is hardware or software related.
2) If you use Safe Mode for the time it normally takes to freeze and it does not freeze, then try it in normal mode again. If it crashes in normal mode but not safe mode, then you have a software problem and you should think about reinstalling or repairing Windows. You should also think about conducting a virus scan with the likes of AVAST or AVG (both are free).
Also, you could look at using a more advanced registry cleaner to clean all the damaged parts of your system. CCleaner is pretty good at cleaning out the temp files but it’s hopeless when it comes to the registry. In order to get the most benefits from a registry cleaner, try using "Frontline Registry Cleaner" which you can read about at http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/best_registry_cleaner_tools.html
3) If your computer does crash during safe mode, it suggests that either your Windows installation is the culprit or a piece of the hardware of your PC. If it crashes in safe mode, back up all your data and then reinstall Windows completely. And if it crashes on your new install then it’s a hardware problem which a computer store will be able to diagnose and fix.

if your ram is less than 1G, don’t even ask.
so if not, recommended to re-install windows is the better way to erase all errors, otherwise you have to un-install all programmes added by you with an expert uninstaller like ”Your Uninstaller!, you may find it at http://www.4shared.com” because it deletes all registry keys left by those programmes.
Check in processes if any process is using a lot of memory, If so try to end the task.
If you are not able to open the task manager there could be a virus try to use a virus remover, no sugessions here, try whichever you think is good or if you have a subscription, do a update then run a full system scan.
Clean out all your temp files, do a disc cleanup that should do it, If you need to clean up manually let me know, I will post the steps.

This problem is common with laptops and poor ventilation. Make sure the laptop is on a hard flat surface. If you have a desktop, make sure your fans aren’t blocked by storing it inside a bookcase where there isn’t much circulation. You can keep track of the comp temperature with a simple program called "speedfan".
