You shouldn’t have lost half of your RAM unless your RAM has died, is faulty or is sticking up out of its’ slot – has the computer been bumped lately? That can knock things a bit too loose.
Maybe the scan is overloading the computer since there is less RAM. Faulty or badly seated RAM can cause some funny behaviour.
If you are confident opening your computer and fiddling around inside, you could try opening the case (shut down first and touch something metal before poking your hands inside to discharge any static charge in your body which could fry the sensitive components) and then pull out all the RAM except one stick. See if the computer boots and you can run a few minor things. Now shut down and put in another stick of RAM and see what happens. If you get more than one short "happy" beep or a series of beeps or no action at all with one lot of RAM, there is a problem with it OR it’s not sitting firmly in its’ slot. Do this until you have tested all the RAM.
