there are two ways two increase your computer speed:-
1) apply some of the tweaks given at http://imtarun.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-speed-up-pccomputer_21.html
2) if not works reinstall your windows xp.
I found http://www.pchelpdoc.com
This site has been helpfull for stuff like this.
There is alot of free help on there.
Goodluck!
First start off by taking off all those programs because it seems you overloaded your RAM with bulky software. I recommend WINDOWS LIVE ONECARE. This software is free for 90 days, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy the fact that it does not clutter your PC. You might also want to upgrade and max out your RAM to prevent this from happening again.
Well additional computer programs take additional resources do you have enough processor power and memory for your level of Windows.
Please re-post your hardware and software configuration for a more specific answer.
But also see below and for best protection run in safe mode first
For total protection you really need a good anti-virus,good spyware protection and a good firewall.
Start off rebooting in Safe Mode with networking support
(when rebooting hit f8 key)
Download the following:
(if you can not from your machine borrow a friend’s machine and download to CD or Usb memory key first, then load from cd or Usb key while in safe mode)
Ensure that you have
1.Virus protection any one of the following
Norton, McAFee, must be purchased
AntiVir, AVG Free, or Avast free for home use
run a full scan using one of the above
2. Spyware protection
SpyBot 1.6 free for home use
run a full scan
fix any noted errors
Then run the immunize function
For extra protection also implement the hosts file Spybot recommends
in advanced function tools
3. Firewall
Zonealram
free for home use
give its microphone a blow job
Everyone knows that Windows computers can sometimes slow down over time. While not an exhaustive list of solutions to problems, this collection presents some ways to speed up a computer.
1. De-Fragmenting
Over time, the data on your hard drive gets scattered. Defragmenting your hard drive puts your data back into sequential order, making it easier for Windows to access it. As a result, the performance of your computer will improve.
a) Right click of C Disk.
b) Click properties.
c) Click tools tab.
d) Click "Defragment now".
e) Click Defragment.
2. Uninstall Unneeded Programs
Removing programs that you no longer use can free up space on your computer and speed up your system’s performance. However, you need to uninstall the programs properly to see much improvement; deleting them is not enough.
3. Stop Programs from starting on Windows boot
One way you can speed up your computer is to prevent programs from launching themselves at start-up. Not only do the unwanted programs delay the start of Windows, they also continue to slow down your computer since they use system resources.
a) Open your Start menu.
b) Click Run
c) In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
d) In the "system configuration utility", click either "service" or "startup" tab
e) Uncheck all programs that you are no longer using.
f) Click "OK"
4. Check for Spyware and Adware
Spyware is software that allows companies to monitor what websites you visit or even access your computer. Adware is software that displays advertisements. Both use system resources and slow your computer down. Detecting and removing the programs will improve system performance.
