Try this it worked for me. Plus its fast.
1. Click the start menu
2. Click Run
3. Type in msconfig and press "OK"
4. Click on Services top right, next to start up.
5. Click on "Hide all Microsoft Services" (Programs needed to run windows)
6. Click on "Disable all"
7. Now click on Startup (top right)
8. Disable All(Disabling all Stupid programs not needed to run windows.
9. Click Apply then close.
10. It will ask you to restart for changes to take effect. "RESTART" You will notice the difference as it boots. If no Difference. More than likely Hardware issues.
Here’s the solution! Click on the start menu on the bottom left of your computer screen. Then click on all prorams, accessories, system tools, then disk defragment. A window will pop up. Then click on the defragment button. This will boost your computer speed at its top. Enjoy the new results!!
In most cases, it is spyware. Download hijackthis and go to http://hijackthis.de and analyze it and you will know if you have spyware,
then scan it with spybot S&D, make sure you have latest definition file
If it is still slow and not detecting any spyware. You may have some corrupted files do the following
Try other browser like Opera or Firefox and see if it is slows
Try other computer, if other pc is also slow, it could be the ISP has problem with the line.
If it is still slow, try this
start->run type in
sfc /scannow It will restore system files in origianl state (files may be corrutped)
If it is still slow, click task manager, and see what is taking cpu and memory time. End it if you see some taking more than 80 cpu time and high memory as well
If it is still slow, wait a couple of day, and reformat and reinstall the pc!
The normal culprit of a suddenly slower computer is spyware. If a full scan with Adaware and Spybot search and destroy does not find and remove a lot of spyware,
(you said you had Adaware, you can get SpybotS&D here;
http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Spybot_-_Search_and_Destroy/spybot.html
It is important to run BOTH, as it is common for one to find spyware the other has missed)
It is also strongly suggested to follow those scans up with an online virus/ spyware scan here;
http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp
After running all this, you can be reasonably certain your computer is no longer infected with any type of ad/gray/malware.
The next step is to view the amount of currently running processes. Bring up Taskmanger, with cntrl-alt-del. In the bottom left hand corner there should be the word processes:** (**some number here) If there is more than about 40 processes running on an XP computer, there is simply too many processes running in the background. What you want to do is Click Start, Run and type "msconfig" into the box. This will open the MS configuration utility. Click on the start up tab, and write down all the programs listed there. If you are unfamiliar with what should be listed and what does not not need to load at startup, you will need to google each process to see if it can safely be removed from the start up menu.
After eliminating unneeded background processes and any spyware, you should see a marked increase in the PC’s performance
