So i’ve had my computer for a little over two years now, and the entire time i’ve had it (it was a handmedown) it’s sound hasn’t work. I identified the original CD used to install the sound software, but when after installing this correctly it still refuses to work. I am completely unsure how to fix it. windows tells me i have no sound device installed or functioning, but i’m at a loss as to what i should do. I’ve tried every recommended this short of buying a completely new sound device. Any help to be had?

If it was originally a Vista that was dropped back to an XP, you’ll probably need to contact the manufacturer.
When it comes to sound, I always recommend testing it with headphones. If they work, you may need new speakers.
Sorry I can’t help anymore than that.

If Windows is telling you that you have no sound device, the driver is not installing properly. Sound driver needs to install properly so that Windows will recognize it and make it work.
A background process could be conflicting with the driver installation. Try running msconfig. Then choose Diagnostic startup mode, apply, ok. PC will restart. Install the sound driver (and other drivers that may be missing). PC needs to restart to make the driver functional. Run msconfig again to return to Normal mode.
Hope this helps. Worked great for me on many problematic driver installations.
