Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

You can download and scan your computer for free.
Try cleaning the registry – this is a low-cost way to boost the speed of old computers. You can download a registry cleaner from http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/best_registry_cleaner_tools.html and let it find errors on your Pc. It should report back all the problems that are on there and fix them, speeding up your system.
There are a bunch of ways that you can speed up your computer. In fact you can get your computer back to it’s "brand new" speed without buying any new hardware. Here are some tips: http://www.ehow.com/how_2275357_computer-run-faster.html
256?
yes upgrading to 1 gb will speed things up but so will cleaning out the registry
yes it will help
but not that much
the extra memory will make it more efficient
and so it will appear quicker
but the processor is goner be say 900 mhz ?
win 98 system ?
try it but don’t spend to much
yes i understand but putting memory into a old computer is a waste. its not going to help
If "online games" means anything other than Pogo, then forget it. Everything about it is just too outdated. The video is too weak. And adding more ram might help is you want to use it for browsing and email, but realistically not much more.
first off, you’ll need more than a defrag. try getting a copy of ccleaner and clean up your registry. and possibly a trojan scan.
memory upgrade wont change the speed much at all (like 5%) all it will do is expand your virtual cache so it can handle more. If you want to make it run a bit faster, get a video card that has a decent speed, mhz, and rpm. if the pipelines are decent, you should get a bit more boost. If the videocard has a processor, you can enable the processor through registry edit. other things you can do to improve the startup speed is to disable a few programs on startup using msconfig.

Well, you can only get so much virtual memory out of 256mg. LOL

What Windows refers to as `virtual memory` is what the rest of us refer to as `swap space` or a `swap file`. It’s space on the hard disk drive that the OS uses as though it were RAM. It is, of course, for that reason, much slower than real RAM.
So that issue, at least, is only indirectly related to having a low amount of real RAM.
Nonetheless, your other problems with the computer likely are due to limited RAM. As long as you’re not being charged too much for it, I would certainly suggest you add as much RAM to this machine as you possibly can. You’ll notice a general improvement in all aspects of performance. Programs will probably launch noticeably faster, so the issue you describe in which it takes several minutes to open your web browser or to open different types of documents will probably be alleviated to some extent.
As for any registry issues, I doubt that would be much of a problem. Use CCleaner or similar and forget about it. Don’t waste money taking the computer to someone for an issue like that.
You should be able to use up to 1.5GB of RAM in this machine.
putting any money into an older pc is a waste. memory might help but just because you have more doesnt mean it will go faster. memory is just a faster place for data to be stored before it goes through the processor. if the processor is 9 years old then more memory will not help, i suggest you get on craigs list and get a $20 computer thats 2-3 years old and put more memory into that
Basically yes – 1gb of memory will make a big difference, although you may want to consider upgrading to run the most recent versions of Internet Explorer/Google Chrome etc – most PCs with windows (XP especially) can’t really run nowadays with virusscanning software and vulnerability (security) patches being bombarded ontop of the standard operating system. Anything greater than 512mb will speed up XP quite a bit, but it’s more comfortable with 2gb or more (but only recognises +2gb if on the 64bit version). 256mb is the bare minimum for low graphics non-internet stuff. One other way of speeding it up is to reduce the screen resolution/colours – it’s probably set at 16 or 24 bit – it won’t be as pretty but the pc won’t be spending all it’s time updating the screen.
