Bill’s suggestion is a good one..
If that doesn’t help, and you do decide to wipe your PC clean (as in format the PC and destroy any/all data and files on it, then reinstall windows) when you visit websites, and windows update, you will re-download active-x controls. They aren’t all on the PC when you first bought it.. You get them over time. They are little "additions" to websites to allow you to view more content, etc.
You get them as you need them from the websites.
I would suggest wiping your PC clean only as a last resort, but sadly, that does have to happen sometimes with this issue, as MS doesn’t make it easy to fix their deep-down active-x bugs.
Re-formatting your hard drive will get rid of corrupted ActiveX controls, but you will be facing the unpleasant chore of re-installing Windows and all your other programs. One solution to try first is to go into Windows Explorer navigate to your Temporary Internet Files folder and delete all the contents.
