   You need to re-installing windows I could tell you how to get a free pre-activated copy of windows xp off the net and burned to disc but people tend to get a little upset when other people do that. unless you have a partition/another HD with a good copy of the OS thats what you need to do, check it out, google it.

   If you want your pics/vids/ect.. off the drive put another working drive (best if it has windows 2000 so you dont have to worry about deactivation) boot from that drive and you can access the files on the drive with the broken OS from the drive with a good OS. this way all won’t be lost when your format/reinstall windows on your old drive. you may also be able to just replace the missing files to repair it this way.

   You can do system restore by pressing F10 when your computer start.
   But for me i prefer to do a default factory setting instead as its 100% sure to solve the problem.

   Sounds like you either removed a driver or you got hit by a virus. I would just find someone you know with the OS you have.
   Judging by how this is happening I’m going to assume you have windows XP.
   For your last couple of questions…
   I DO NOT recommend that you download software off the internet unless its from HP themselves. Try getting support off of HP’s website and see waht they can say about it.
   If your computer is "Repaired" then there may be some file lost but not much. If it is "Restored" or Reformated you will lose all your Pictures and Files… Well there is a way to retrieve them but its a very long and complicated process I believe.

   Borrow disk from friend that has same OS version as you and insert it into the drive.

   PS That is bummer part of HPs…they don’t give you an OS disk like most other makers do. But you might be able to buy one from them depending on how old your computer is.

   increase ur RAM
   the problem seems to be of performance
   upgrade and check
