It sounds like a virus got into your system and messed things up. Reboot your computer in safe mode, then run a scan with a anti-virus program. Quarantine all files that were found infected, then reboot computer again, and hold F8 when it starts to turn on, until it comes up with a black screen that says start computer normally. click that and it should fix the problem. If your computer is asking you to insert a recovery disk, then it may be too late to do anything. The virus or an error within your OS may have permanently damaged your drives and therefore you need to either reinstall your computer’s old OS, with a disk, ( the disk is needed, i know you stated you don’t have one, but you will need it for this process) or you could just buy a new computer, thats always an option. My suggestion would be to call your service provider (opimum, verizon, net zero) and explain to them, the situation you are in with your computer. They may be able to help! Hope this helps you fix your problem
Read the PC User Manual (download it from HP) to how to burn your very own Vista Recovery disks, and, how to return your PC to "Factory New" condition.
It may, or may not, work as expected, depending on the status of your hard drive.
If not: Order replacement Vista Recovery disks directly from HP / Compaq, by PC Make and Model Number. These are way less expensive than Retail versions, and include all the required Device Drivers.
