Hi all, I keep getting a Windows installer pop up window saying ‘preparing to install…’ and nothing more each time I boot into Vista. It only pops up then. I’m pretty confident it has to do with a corrupted installation of Symantec NIS, since I was unable to install it automatically and thus had to do it manually (deleting files, cleaning registry…)
I’ve tried disable the Windows Installer service but to no avail. I’ve also tried Microsoft Windows Install Clean Up tool, but the offending installation doesn’t show there (I guess it’s due to having removed it by hand).
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks!
Oh sorry I meant I was unable to *uninstall* Symantec NIS automatically, that’s why I deleted it manually. I’ve done the registry cleanups with CCleaner btw.

In the search box of the start menu, type ‘msconfig’ and run it. Go to the startup tab and disable anything which should not be starting with Windows.

uh best bet backup everything and reinstall vista u has a virus
Hi,
Well, I don’t really know Vista, as I don’t really work with it (though I have had a system with it), but have you tried to check in the Start-up program dialog?
You can also try something like "Total Uninstaller" and see if it can’t pick up an installation and then uninstall it. I’ve had a problem similar to this, just with AVG Anti-Virus program (also with vista) – there was a blackout just before it was totally uninstalled, and each time vista start up, it’s uninstaller would run again. I can’t remember exactly how I got rid of that problem, but I do remember that I deleted it’s registry entry manually, and used a Uninstaller program to delete it, but there was something else that I also did.
Sorry if this doesn’t help. I hope you get your problem solved…
