For some reason my system crashes when I go to clean the registry. I’ve used many different reg cleaners and all seem to have the same problem happening. The program will scan the registry, a whole mess of errors with start showing up, then it seems like it gets to a certain part of the registry and then the computer just shuts down and restarts itself.
This certainly can’t be normal or good. Any suggestions on what I could do to fix this problem is much appreciated…

You should buy a registry cleaner. You can get a free one but it is way more trouble then it is worth. You will just be spammed with fake errors and offers to buy other products.
I have had good luck with XP Repair Pro. Check out a review at http://www.squidoo.com/vista-repair
They have a complete 15 day trial. If you like it, great, if not, then dump it, no loss to you.
XP Pro is safe for all versions of Windows.

I guess your computer registry has become corrupt due to using non branded reg cleaners —I rely on CCleaner only and it does an excellent job! the best thing to do now would be to save all your important files and reinstall Win XP
The only thing that could cause that is a corrupt registry, How it got that way I cannot be sure. The surest way to get rid of the problem is to backup and reinstall. Anything that fiddles with the registry is dangerous.
It could be a virus in your registry that shuts down your computer when it is discovered.
