Have you run a defrag?
It sounds to me like you may have a virus or trojan horse – that can cause weird things like this to happen where there is slowness or delays when you click on something to open it. You can download Avast virus checker for free online. I recently had similar problems and Avast caught a virus and I haven’t had problems since.
Also, you can try: running defrag, disk cleanup, clean the cache, and delete any unnecessary startup items. Also, if you have a lot of folders and files and web site links stored on the desktop, drag them into My Documents, as too many items on desktop seems to always slow the computer processes down.
Also, keep in mind if a file is a zip file you’ll need to unzip it before it can open. There is a feature on XP that allows you to unzip the file.
Also run spyware/malware checker programs. If you don’t have it, get Malwarebytes program, its a free download; it catches stuff other programs don’t catch.
If none of these actions seem to help, I’d suggest posting another question about the problem on Y/A, unless in the meantime someone else can answer your question better than I can.
