Unless you're a business person I would do a fresh install of WinXP Home. WinXP Pro is more for the business oriented person. It has a better security system, but that was when it came out. The encryption security system can be broken into faster than the Home Edition, now.
Home is more media oriented.
Now, as I 'said' above, WinXP Pro has an encryption security software.
Generally it won't just let you pop the Home disk in, and write over it.
You need to go into your BIOS Setup utility, and set the First Boot Device to CDROM, in Boot Options.
This way the laptop will boot from the CD in the CDROM drive.

Read the text to the right on this page. Watch the bottom of your monitor as soon as the laptop manufacturer's 'splash screen' comes up.
(Dell, HP, Compaq, etc.) At the bottom it will have the key to press to enter BIOS Setup. (Might say 'Enter setup', or 'Change Setup', or 'BIOS Setup', or 'CMOS Setup', whatever). You can try to sit right there, and watch it like a hawk, so that you can press the Pause/Break key, to pause the screen so that you can view it better.
(Sorry about the Run-On!)
Usually it speeds right by you, so that you have to restart the computer. (CTRL+ALT+Delete keys at the SAME time, to restart. It will probably 'hit' the Windows splash screen, and you'll have to let Windows load fully, then shut it down normally. Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down. wait 20 seconds, or so, restart it.)
Yeah you can and you just need the cd turn off your comp with the cd in the tray start your comp up and press a button to boot from cd then you delete the old partition where xp pro was and install home on that clean partition
