   You’re on the right track with the repair mode, but the one that looks obvious is not the way to go.

   Put in the XP CD and boot to it, but then instead of repair, choose install. Soon it will ask you what partition you want to install to. Choose the existing one. Now you get prompted that a copy of XP is already installed, and asked if you want to repair it. This is where you select the repair option.

   This will most likely fix whatever the problem is, and can help you avoid reformatting.

   no reinstall.
   1.use a boot cd to recover admin pass
   2.repair windows
   this is the easyest.

   if last known good configuration didn’t work those recovery disc’s are about your only option
