If your problem persists, you should check out http://www.pcaholic.com
It provides free downloads that helps fix errors and speed up PCs. There are suggested ways which you can solve your problems and articles there which may be relevant to your case.
I don’t know if you have any experience with Linux, but if you can’t get it to recover, perhaps you can use a live CD such as Knoppix to access the data on the hard drive so he can move it somewhere safely. As for the error, I have no idea.
The guide linked below is old, but it follows the general idea to get started.
Get UBCD for Windows (http://www.ubcd4win.com i think)
Boot with the boot disk
You should see your drive when it boots. Copy the "software" file from c:\windows\repair
to
c:\windows\system32\config
You will have to reinstall all your software, but that should get it booting.
BTW – The reason you can’t see the drive is because it is SATA… You know when you try to boot from the CD and it says "Hit F6 to add aditional storage drivers"? If you have the low level drivers there, and a floppy drive, then you can get it to see the disk. It is not odd at all, it is to be expected.
Don’t run recovery. If you have the original XP Instillation disks, then this is what I recommend you do:
1. Insert the disk and reboot the system.
2. Bring up the BIOS menu before Windows starts up.
3. Once in the BIOS, set your primary boot device to the CD/DVD drive with the XP CD in it.
4. Run off the disk and reinstall windows.

It must be a hardware problem, corruption shouldn’t make it unrecognizable. I would suggest taking the disk to be recoverd at a retail store, it seems it has been damaged.
1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
4. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5. At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak
delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default
6. Type exit to quit Recovery Console. Your computer will restart.
Note This procedure assumes that Windows XP is installed to the C:\Windows folder. Make sure to change C:\Windows to the appropriate windows_folder if it is a different location.
