What can cause windows xp clean install to be very slow, sometimes stall, then continue install?

the install is very slow, but is progressing. It has been about 10 hours now. What could cause this? Could it be the hard drive? Should I just wait it out?
I changed the cd rom drive and still same problem

will running disk clean up make my computer a little faster?

my computer is running kinda slow….I did a virus and spyware scan but everything seems pretty ok….some1 recommended to do a disk clean up…I ran it and said 1,379,990 is the total amount of disk space you’ll gain…..so if I click ok will it make my computer a little faster?

or should I buy it some NIKES? LOL
