As far as I can tell, the hard disk is ok (it still shows up in my RAID set), but Windows XP Pro won’t boot, and gives me a system error ("windows\system32\config\system is missing or corrupt.")

Unfortunately I don’t have the original OS disc, but i have a XP Media Edition CD, which came with a recent Dell system purchase. I attempted to repair my old comp from the CD, but the Windows Recovery console gave me a "cannot find hard disk" error. The console gives me the same error when I tried formatting a brand new hard disk with the CD, so I am thinking something is up with the Dell software. It’s understandable that Dell would prohibit the software being used on any system but the one your bought from them.

So, would a new XP Pro CD work to repair the registry, even if it’s not the original, or is there something else I’m missing?

These pop up when not on Internet, then on Internet have pop ups from classmates.com. How can I get these to stop, I have uninstalled registry cleaner that the fix it is from but it still pops up.I can’t find them on hard drive or in WIndows. How can I get this to stop or get off computer?

I use AVG internet security already which is quite comprehensive, has anti virus, firewall,, anti spyware etc etc. but are they any other programs you would recommend?

Ie a registry cleaner, a trojan remove etc etc?

i currently have a problem with my windows vista, and as a suggestion in from the microsoft community informed me that i should try repairing it by using a back up disk of windows, but my windows software was pre-installed , so i dont actually have a back up CD. add the fact that windows home premium doesnt support the whole PC back up function. do i really need to get a new OS? or can i download a clean version of it somewhere, without necessarily pirating one. the suggestion mentioned something like "performing a repair installation or an in-place upgrade"

here’s the link to the suggestion for the repair, if anyone has a better suggestion or a way to help me do the suggestion, by all means reply. hehe..thanks in advance 😀
