Just bought a new Gateway desktop and for some reason …anytime we click on an application, no matter what it is, the computer just freezes up, requiring a hard reboot (turning off the computer at the powerstrip). It won’t let us do anything. We use the computer primarily for surfing the internet. Should I run the antivirus software and see if that cures the problem before taking the tower back to Best Buy to have them run a diagnostic or do you think that’s a bad idea? Thanks.

Take it back, or make lemonade. Even if you do manage to fix it this problem will happen again. The average PC user shouldnt have to go through this with a new computer. If they can fix it fine, get the problem documented though.
Run your computer in safe mode and scan for viruses. It may also be a case of low ram, how much ram do you have?? More RAM means faster the computer, it may be a good idea to buy a few gb of ram..
