I’ve seen a few people on here asking for links for free registry cleaners so I’m posting these links for a complete pc security a/v anti-spy anti hacker firewall and registry cleaner.
http://www.avast.com for a great free ware a/v..
http://www.zonealarm.com for Zone Alarm basic (free) firewall
http://www.eusing.com for Eusing free registry cleaner
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/beta/forcefield/ZAF
FSetup-10_217_0_beta.exe for secure browser for internet banking and other electronic financial internet stuff.
http://www.ashampoo.com/ for WinOptimizer2008 or WO4 and other interesting stuff on the cheap or free, let me know if you use the links and what do you think?
Hi to you 750 rider, you are wrong, totally, I run all of these on my own pc, and I advise others to run it as well, it’s very good, I can vouch for that and I am an IT practitioner with long experience, and I know my onions.
Hi Rich, well I never had to do anything like that, this is the configuration I run now, and have done for a while. I stopped running it for a couple of weeks trying out other stuff, and my pc got root kit(which I got rid of with Panda) , and loadsa other c**p so I went back to the above and it runs well. Totally pleased with it.
I use XP and don’t like Vista, maybe that’s why it runs better…..

the anti virus you chose is good , i liked avast but stick with avira, also a better firewall than zone alarm is the free comodo
version 2.4 , also comodo passed more tests than zone alarm,
i wouldnt recommend using a registry cleaner , because i had
a registry cleaner and it screwed up my computer to the point
i had to format and it made my dvd burner and wifi not work
by saying there has been a corruption in the registry and i couldnt even access regedit
I post alot of answers to the same question. I’ve been actually discouraging people from using the free utilities.
People who aren’t really computer savy need something that will do everything by itself. They don’t know how to create scheduled tasks or cron jobs to do automatic scans and quarentine purges.
Thing is you get a lot of people who know absolutely nothing about computers except where the power button is. When you use the free programs you have to usually do some tweaks. Take spybot for example. By default it will create a backup of all spyware and usage tracks even if you remove them. BHO monitor is turned off. Active X Monitor is turned off. Those are helpful utilities when properly configured. Most people don’t even know that they are supposed to purge the backups in spybot when they finish scanning.
If they use one of the internet security packages like Norton, Panda, or Trend Micro, it does everything for them. The only user interaction it needs is when there’s a problem. And even then it’s minimal.
I’ve been in the computer business 10 years and I used to recommend that stuff. People started complaining because they still get infected and stuff. When I look at their system the definition files are 10 months old, and the last scan was 7months ago. Then they say, "oh I thought it would do all that for me". People don’t want to spend $50 to protect a 4 to 9 hundred dollar purchase but will spend 1 to 3 hundred getting it fixed when it crashes or dies.
I’m using avast! home as well. It scored Advance on both the On-Demand and Retrospective Test at
http://www.av-comparatives.org so it has good detection rates.

For the Firewall: I strongly recommend Zone Alarm for users who have basic knowledge of computers and want simple easy softwares. If you’re an advance user (which I think you are) who wants advance protection and settings I recommend these two:
Comodo Firewall Pro (It’s free):
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Powerful Firewall with an easy GUI (Graphic User Interface) that you can interact with to change settings, update the firewall, etc.
Comodo Pro also comes with HIPS (Defense+) that monitors your computer for any malicious activity (but not everything that Defense+ detects is malicious).

Online Armor Free:
http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free…
Online Armor also has an easy GUI and HIPS like Comodo however Online Armor will automatically detect any network that you connect your laptop to as trusted meaning that hackers can gain access to your computer once he’s in the network that you’re connected to.

I’m not familiar with Eusing (I’m using EasyCleaner 2.0 by Tony Arts as my registry cleaner).

The other software, again, I have no knowledge of; but generally, you have a solid protection. If you’re using either DSL or Cable and have 30-55 dollars to spare, try investing in a hardware firewall (found in routers) which can give you an extra layer of protection along with your software firewall.
Take care 🙂
