My ethernet light does not come on. My internet provider sent me a new modem but it still does not work. I had McAfee anti virus. When it expire, I tried to upgrade it but it did not work. I do not currently have any anti virus on the computer. I am so frustrated right now. I called a computer repair company that told me they would charge me 9.00 to check the computer and fix the problem. I can’t afford that right now.

If the light is off there are a few things that it could be:
The ethernet cable is bad or the ends are bad.
The NIC card on the PC is disabled or not working.
Or if there is more than one ethernet (NIC Card) on the PC you are plugged into the wrong one.
Try these one at a time.
Once you have established connection you will be able to update your McAfee or other anti-virus solution of your choice.
If you beleive you have a virus/spyware here are some helpful programs i have used before:
Virus/Spyware Removal Instructions:
Download, install, and update antivirus and antispyware programs (found below). Turn off System Restore off (Right click My Computer, to Properties, go the Restore tab, check the box to Disable system restore). Reboot into Safe Mode (pressing F8 on power up). Run the installed antivirus/spyware. After you have verified they are removed turn System Restore on (uncheck the box) and make sure all of your Windows Updates are completed.

There are certain things that you should do in trying to solve this, it’s probably best to start with the cheapest (i.e. free).
If you know how to find it (I assume you’re using Windows, which I haven’t used for over a year now) go to your hardware profile. On Win2K I believe this was accessed via the "properties" dialog accessed by right-clicking on "My Computer" and found as a button under the "Hardware" tab. Anyway, once you find it, look for a tree-item (or equiv for your version of Windows) called "Ethernet Adapters".
If your NIC shows up with a yellow icon with a black exclamation mark, this probably means the driver is corrupted. The best solution for you, in that case, would be either to find the disk that came with it containing appropriate drivers, or to replace your NIC. You could try to find an appropriate driver on your system, but I don’t recommend that.
If it does not have an exclamation icon it may be that the NIC is disabled in your current profile; you can change that by editing the entry and enabling it in your current hardware profile.
If your NIC does not appear in the hardware list, then it is not installed. It can happen in some situations that hardware is uninstalled for one reason or another and this problem is solved in a similar way to a corrupted driver. You should find an "Add hardware" tool in your control panel, which you can use to search for uninstalled hardware.
If the NIC appears and is not disabled or faulty then it might be your cable, which would need replacing. If that does not solve your problem then it is likely a more involved software issue. Never be afraid to re-install windows as this is often a needed step to solve many conflicts in that operating system.
