I have an old Pentium that I just want to use for word processing, internet, and exel. It is running really slow and I just want to clean it up so it will run faster. It runs Windows 98. I think I need to defragment the hard drive and remove programs I don’t use, how do I do this? Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I would be tempted to format the hard drive and reinstall windows but if you want to defrag click start >programs >accessories >system tools >disk defragmenter if it asks what drive to defrag pick C: click ok then wait several hours till it’s finished
before you do that you’ll see scandisk in the same place as defrag click that tick the box marked "automatically fix errors" click start and let it run then defrag
Dude not to be rude… But a Pentium II running windows 98 and you want it to run faster? The only way that thing is getting faster is if you drop it off your roof.
Use puppy linux. It is much faster and does not require any install. Just pop the CD in and it runs in RAM.

I will try to help.
to defragment the hard drive ,
It would be a good idea to also do a Scandisk before and after you do the Defrag, as Scandisk usually finds and fixes other disk problems to include Disk Space and other errors..
After you have computer up and running, Do this:
1. Using your mouse, go to ‘My Computer’, Open it to " Explore".
2. When your Icons come up, select the HDD to defrag. Open it to " Explore".
3. Search to find " tools",
4. Open defrag. Follow all prompts.
Alternate Way:
1. Go to " Start " bar, Come up to " Programs ", Search for " Accessory’s ".
2. In " Accessory’s ", Go to " Computer Tools ", Find " Defrag. HDD ".
3. Open " Defrag. HDD ", Open it, Choose which HDD you want to Defrag..Follow all prompts.
Note. Either way, It will take ‘A Lot Of Time’, Run Defrag at least 2 Complete Times. ( Every time Defrag is Run, it will get a little faster.
Hope this helped.
