I myself, would stay away from "free" registry cleaners. Purchasing a premium registry cleaner will have more benefits than a free registry cleaner. But before you download or purchase anything, I would strongly recommend that you do some research (via search engines), about the specific registry software you’re interested in.
A good registry cleaner in my opinion, should be able to help you with the following areas:
COM/ActiveX, Uninstall Entries, Font Entries, Shared DLLs, Application Paths, Help Files Information, Windows Startup Items, File/Path References, Program Shortcuts, Empty Registry Keys, Shell Extensions
Good registry cleaners will scan through the ‘registry database’ and fix 100’s of corrupt files that are in there.
The registry database is a big collection of settings & information which makes your computer personalized to you (stuff like your latest emails and your desktop wallpaper are stored in the registry). The registry is such an important part of Windows that it’s constantly being used to hlp your PC run as smoothly as possible… but unfortunately, it’s often the case that many regsitry files are saved in the wrong way, making your PC unable to load them very quickly, slowing your system down.
Registry cleaners fix these problems and make your computer run a lot faster again. That’s why they are important, because if you have corrupt registry files on your PC, it will end up running a lot slower and with more & more errors. Why should you clean the Windows registry?
The Windows Registry contains information that is continuously referenced during routine PC operations. Over time, the Windows Registry can begin to contain information that’s no longer valid. Maybe you uninstalled an application without using the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ function in the Control Panel, or perhaps an object or file in the registry got moved. Eventually this orphaned or misplaced information accumulates and begins to clog your registry, potentially slowing down your PC and causing error messages and system crashes. ?You might also notice that your PC’s startup process is slower than it used to be.
it helps to delete old poor registry entries of the uninstalled or modified programms
I am doubtful that you can get any benefit from a registry cleaner – all it does is help get rid of orphan entries and keys no longer in use I suppose. You don’t need to pay – use the registry cleaner in CCleaner which is free

A registry cleaner is a type of software utility designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system whose purpose is to remove redundant or unwanted items from the Windows registry. However the necessity and usefulness of registry cleaners is a controversial topic, with experts not agreeing on their benefit. The problem is further clouded by the fact that malware and scareware is often associated with utilities of this type.
