Hello!
I’ve got XP Pro 32-bit and want to upgrade to Vista 64-bit.
I’ve heard that this isn’t possible and that a clean install must be done.
If so, what do I have to do to make sure that everything is backed up and works once the clean install is finished?
For example, I have plenty of games and programs installed on my C drive–do I need to backup my registry *and* my C drive so that everything won’t need to be reinstalled?
If so, how would I go upon doing that?
Thanks!

You can’t restore your XP 32 bit registry to a 64 bit Vista OS — so don’t bother backing it up.
Backup your important files, favourites, installation files etc.
Some programs will no longer work because not all programs run on 64 bit — so you’ll have to revisit their websites to grab newer versions.
This applies for drivers too — you will need to check for driver updates for your motherboard, graphics card etc. from the homepage.
As for games, you can’t really back them up either. Uninstall them first to prevent any DRM issues, then install them again once your new OS is up and running.
you can’t upgrade >you need a full version of vista 64 bit and do a clean install>then you can reinstall everything you backed up to disk or flash drive
Cant do it like that, you have to reinstall everything after the windows install, due to the nature of 32-bit and 64-bit paging and data registry.
You ahve to do a fresh reinstall of the 64-Bit because it simply cannot be upgraded from 32 to 64.
