My friends computer has become infected with spyware or a virus. He is running Windows XP on a Compaq. Theres a little dialog box popping up constantly that says theres a virus on the computer. When you click on the box it redirects you to a spyware remover page. Obviously its an attempt to sell this product. How can I remove this and stop all these pop ups? I was thinking about manually cleaning the registry. How would I go about that? And what about those programs in the Add/Remove programs in control panel that just wont go away? I need to get this junk off his computer. What do I do? Without spending money that is.

Buy ZoneAlarm. It’s your best bet for ensuring that the registry is completely clean of malware.
aol has a good spyware removal and antivirus, free, open for anyone. The google pack (you need XP) gives you Norton for free, with the updated virus software. Careful with the pop-up removal programs, they prevent a lot of legit pop-ups to come and many programs do not work. If nothing works, back up your files ( on another comp, or any hardware with enough disk space) and delete everything else. Reinstall step by step, checking each file to see if infected.
I had that happen it a trojan you could download avast antivirus. It will scan your computer from your boot. So you can’t get that pop up again. There is a trial version if you want the full version email me….
You could also try download search and destroy spyware blocker. It will clean up and block any spyware on your computer.
I hope this helps…….
Evidently your friend doesn’t have his virus software up to date. A free anti virus program called AVAST is great. Try it to clean up your friends computer. Also you should try Spy Sweeper for MSN another good program. The AVAST anti virus should be able to help with the registry as well. Worth a try and it’s free. I’ve used Norton’s for years and like this program better. Good Luck
Ignore That Pop-Up. It’s ONLY an "AD"…It will scan your computer an tell you you have all sorts of viruses and worms, & Trojan Horses, it’s all a lie to get you to buy their bogus software.

go to http://www.download.com and search for spyware removal tools and anti-virus (AVG is a good one). also CCleaner will clean up the registry without you having to do it manually (so you don’t delete something you need) this website (download.com) has lots of helpful software you can download, just make sure you check the license and make sure that it is free.
Download and run spybot, spy sweeper, and hijackThis.
.
You don’t need to go to the registry.
There are two FREE tools plus another method to fix this problem.
1. http://avast.com/
a. Download this anti-virus program
b. Go to Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and remove old anti-virus program (it didn’t work).
c. Install Avast and run it. Allow it to run all of the time. Take little memory and is a powerful little tool that catches everything.
2. Go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
a. Dowload HijackThis 1.99.1 Install it and run it.
b. BE CAREFUL do NOT delete everything in the log…some of the findings are good-ware you want. Find the bad-ware check, and allow program to delete it.
3. The other option is to go to the computers Last Known Good Configuration.
Go to Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then restore the system to a time PRIOR to infection.
