I've read a number of articles from PC World to Computer Hope extolling the necessity of using registry cleaners which carry the names as 'Registry Cleaners', EasyCleaners', 'RegistryOrganizers', 'RegCure', among other names. However, when I came across a book (McGraw Hill Osborne) entitled "The Healthy PC" by Carey Holzman, a PC Repair Specialist of 15 years, it stated (Chapter 12, p.195) that these are softwares to avoid. The reason is simply that based on his years of experiance, they create more problems than it solve. He compared it to putting a band aid to a gapping wound.
I’ve read so much about registry cleaners but still clueless if its good or bad on my PC. What is it actually?

I was trying to clean up my system registry after malware changed some of the settings, and I think I inadvertently removed or changed the part that automatically executes explorer.exe on startup. Now, my computer will only boot up part way – the desktop doesn't appear. I can manually execute explorer and it will finish activating the desktop, but I'd like to fix it correctly. Is there a way to easily add this command back into the registry, and if so, how and where? If not, is there a download that I can use to restore the default settings for the system registry?
I'm currently using avg but I don't think it gets rid of the virus I think it just stores it. And I think in february they are starting to charge for it. Does anyone know another virus protection program I can download?
I don't want AVG because it doesn't get rid of the virus it just stores it…and adaware is a spysweeper program. I want virus protection
On the internet, I have found a large number of photo restoration / repair software programs, but I dont know which is best / easiest to use with Microsoft Windows XP. Of the following, which would be best, especially for a Forrest Gump type of person.
1) Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 / 7.0
2) Roxio Creator 2009
3) ACDSee Photo Power Pack 2009
4) ACDSee Photo Manager
5) Sony Photo Go Editing Software
Which is the best value: price versus ease of use / understanding?
