CHKDSK is verifying file data ( stage 4 of 5 )…

Now, after going through the above sequential process, the screen shows
the familiar

doesn’t… the whole process as listed above starts all over again ! it goes on over and over again – the same ‘groundhog day’ scenario !! today is the 3rd day

has occured after I downloaded and ran a REGISTRY CLEANER software with
DEFRAG etc. maintenance. Now, I’ve tried F8 to run XP on SAFE MODE ..also tried ‘ on F8 ‘LAST KNOWN CONFIGURATION THAT WORKED’ prompt..NOTHING—also I have no Xp CD’s .it comes back to the above sequence over n over again. I am a NOVICE at these things with limited computer knowledge cab anyone tell me what to do PLEASE

The computer is screwed… you need a fresh install of XP… Unless you know someone who has a custom boot disk and knows how to use it.
Two lessons learned:
1. Never use registry "cleaners" unless you know what you’re doing. The ones that you buy are usually pieces of crap that end up erasing registry entries vital to your computer’s operation without giving you any clue before hand. Then there are a couple free ones that work great, but you have to know what registry entries to look for after it scans for "bad" entries so you can keep the ones that will kill your system if they are deleted.
2. ALWAYS back up important info on removable media. So when things like this happen you don’t lose everything.
Now for the next computer… if you want to clean it up and make it faster just use what Windows already gave you. Go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall programs you don’t use. Make sure you’re deleting internet temp files and cookies. Then Defrag once a month. If alot of uneccessary stuff is starting up with your computer… first look at the folder under programs in the start menu that is called "startup" and delete anything in there. Then open "run" type "regedit" and go to these two folders and only these two folders: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software
\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software
\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run
Here you can locate and delete entries for things that you absolutely know without a doubt don’t need to start up with Windows… For the ones you’re not sure of just leave them alone, or do some research… google the name of the entry to find out if it is important.
Sorry about the computer… Good luck.
PS. The jokers above obviously didn’t read the whole question… one guy says "go to safe mode" and the next says "use the XP cd"… The person asking the question already tried safe mode and said they don’t have the XP cd! AARRGH! don’t answer questions unless you read them first!
insert the windows CD boot up your pc and choose "repair"
Install your Backup Windows Disc came with Computer before starting it and just follow instructions to get necessary files from disc to fix this problem.
If LAST KNOWN CONFIGURATION.. didn’t worked you can edit registry by doing the following things in Safe Mode
Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Highlight the Winlogon file.
In the list look for "SFCScan", this should be set to (0) if it is set to (1) the scan will happen at every boot.
>More I could suggest is Try all the Start Menu(F8) Options if unsuccessfull buy Vista. That’s all I could suggest
And AS far as I know User edited his Question after my Answering and had add that safe mode info. Some people are over smart here.
