Here’s the deal.
I love Windows. I’m a big Windows fanboy, but even so, I understand that Windows systems get worse.. and worse.. and worse over time. My XP is getting to that point. I’ve ran every cleaning software, virus software, registry cleaner.. everything. I think this XP is about at it’s end, so I ask for opinions.
I have a Windows Vista laptop, so I still have access to windows. Besides gaming (which I would miss dearly on my desktop), is there really a LARGE change between Ubuntu and Windows? I’ve always been interested in Ubuntu but I’m kind of iffy, I’m not so sure about the installation of programs and such, and as I said before, I’d miss a good portion of the games I play on my desktop.

So keep XP for games. You needn’t do without.
Installing programs is very easy and some of the free applications you never even heard of; never mind used! You just click on System, then Administration then Synaptic; password, choose your software and click, click, wait a minute and installed. Lovely.
There are other ways but that’s about the easiest. getdeb.net has some top apps that you just click on.
Printers. Most work and some don’t. You get full functionality from the all-in-ones but it needs to be on the list, that’s all. If you have a good one then you are keeping windows for games anyway, so . . .
I would use Ubuntu with gnome but Linux Mint is really good too. Ubuntu has so much support. Any error I’ve had has been a case of cutting and pasting the error message to google and copy the instructions.
There are also lots of oppurtunities for playing games through wine and crossover games. Plus there are the Linux games. And a fair few simulators for super nintendos and PS2 etc etc. You can use a nintendo wii mote as a mouse or controller. Pair a bluetooth phone to your laptop and when you leave the laptop shuts down and starts up when you arrive back. You set the distances.
I just couldn’t do without it now
For gaming there is XP
For everything else there is Linux
WHY LINUX IS BETTER

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Well, you can run registry cleaners all day long, and it still won’t produce the same results as just wiping the system. Do this, and see how your computer runs. If you are happy with the performance, then don’t worry about Ubuntu.
how bout try windows 7…its gonna be the best thing Microsoft has ever unleashed….it looks like vista, buts runs stable like XP…..you are able to try it for free on the Microsoft web site, and try it for 90 days or something…
Ive used ubuntu before, on several occasions….write and compile programs for college….and the use of a built in terminal is great! especially if you have some unix experience….
Ubuntu also looks very nice, alot better then XP…but as for compatibility issues, that might be your main problem….yes, there are programs for Ubuntu that allow you to run windows programs, but its a hassle, and its really not worth it….
My suggestion, is to try Windows 7….Ubuntu is fine to play around with, and writing programs….but for everyday use, it can be a pain….
good luck!
Unbuntu and XUnbutu are great tools for working, but you wont have some things such as:
– windows gaming
– windows office
– Internet Explorer (gladly you will start using Firefox which is much better)
You got some other games and an alternative office that you can use.
Pretty much all applications are free and it’s very easy to use and configure.
Right now I got a desktop that I’m running Vista and Xunbutu (is a lighter version of Ubuntu).
If wasnt for the lack of Photoshop and windows gaming, I would probably not go back for Windows (and I have been working with Windows for a long time – since 3.11).
Why don’t you have both of worlds on your desktop. Reinstall the XP so you can still have a Windows system running and afterwards install Xunbuntu or Unbuntu. A new boot entry will be created and you will have 30 seconds to choose Windows or Linux every time that your computer starts.
Yes it’s a big change. The wise choice would be to dual boot Ubuntu and XP.
Computers, as you said, as crapped up after a while. You should install a clean copy of Windows w/updates and drivers. Then make an image of it with Acronis True Image. By doing so you will be able to restore your clean Windows environment whenever it gets bogged down.
Still, try Ubuntu. It’s nice, but tough to adjust to for many.
Try Ubuntu by all means; I think it is more or less a tie between those two operating systems. None is the obvious choice.
if u want more security and have patience to download all software for linux than go for ubuntu….it is best
but if u wanna play games have easy access than go for window
I have the perfect solution. google "wubi" and install. It is a windows-based Ubuntu installer And you can test out ubuntu but still boot into windows if you like. Give it a shot! 🙂
Get Windows 7
it comes out next month
neither. XP. trust me. faster and better
I would say wait awhile a Windows 7 will be out shortly.
Good Luck
WINDOWS
Why not give it a try?
I would suggest you purchase another hard drive and install it on there.
With regards to Win XP, it is still the defacto O/S for business. I would reformat that drive you have now (the long version not the quick reformat) and reinstall the O/S. A fresh install does wonders for your computer.
