What exactly is the purpose of about:blank?

About:blank is the default homepage on some web browsers and is nothing more than a blank page. You could type it into your address bar and it’d take you to the blank white screen. What is it for?
Mike: I kinda guessed at that already. Thanks for the confirmation. Now I guess I don’t need this anymore now that I know the answer for sure now.

How do you get rid of an about.blank page that keeps popping up every time I click on my browser?

I change the default settings to http://www.yahoo.com and every time i click the internet explorer button, the about blank page reopens as the default. I had removed some viruses and trojans earlier. Could it be because of this? Please help! I need this page to stop popping up.
