Can I use a Windows CD that came with a Dell laptop to repair files on an HP laptop?

I inherited a HP 510 Notebook PC from a friend but any software that came with it is lost.

The Dell CD says "only for use on a Dell" or some such stuff but that seems like it might be just corporate nonsense.

I can load the recovery console in the HP at bootup using the Dell disk but I want to know if there’s any real reason not to try it out before I start messing with it.

I’m trying to clean up my brothers laptop (windows XP). Help?

He has a lot of nonsense on his laptop and i have already installed a pestpatrol and an antivirus and ran them both so i have all pests and viruses off. how do i clean up his desktop from all the icons and make it look and run like a well maintained computer??
