I would not pay for a registry cleaner. There are some good ones available for free. I’ve been using ccleaner for a couple of years without any problems. And there are several more available through a site called Major Geeks.

I’d also suggest a few more things. When you first log on and with no programs running (just sitting at the desktop), right click an empty part of the task bar (between the start button and the clock), then click Task Manager, then Processes Tab. With no programs running, a typical XP has 30 – 35 processes running at start up. Your system idle process should have the most CPU usage (mid to high 90% range.) Just about everything else should be around 0%.
I’d also do a Disk Cleanup and a Defrag. Click start > all programs > accessories > system tools > disk cleanup. Check mark everything and run it. After you do the disk cleanup, do a defrag. If you’ve never done it before, it could take a few hours depending on size of hard drive.
I’d also do a system file check (start > run > type in "sfc /scannow" > OK (no quotes and note the space between sfc and /scannow.) This check will look for damaged or missing files. If any are found you’ll need to insert your XP install disk. This scan could take over an hour.
If all else fails, try a Repair Install of the entire XP. You won’t lose any personal settings or programs but you will have to visit the windows update site for patches, etc that came out after your disk was made. This link will give you instructions and screen shots of what you will see. I chose XP Pro but the steps are the same for XP Home. Hope some of this helps.

Download this program and run it. Its called Windows Defender which is really popular in the world. Thats the #2 popular product. You can find it here : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displaylang=en
There is another Windows scanner found here : http://safety.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm?s_cid=mscom_hp
It is enough if you run these two. If still the computers slow. Try increasing the Virtual Memory or your RAM capacity
Virtual Memory need not be changed unless the computer warns/tells you that it is low on virtual Memory
