There are LOTS of free computer protection programs! You can check at http://reviews.cnet.com/software/ to search for any software you like. You will see Editor and Consumer reviews – and read them yourself to determine if they fit your needs.
However, there is no one BEST program for everyone! Each person’s individual computer usage is completely different. Some folks download illegal programs and music, which exposes them to more infections than any other behavior. Some folks only read their email and do some light surfing.
Because usage is different, the appropriate software is different for everyone.
Here is a list of *FREE* programs that do their job well, for various security tasks. Most of the time, SEVERAL PROGRAMS ARE NECESSARY to maintain a full range of security/protection against viruses, trojans, worms, etc.
There is a safe site, with software reviews by both the editors and users at http://www.download.com Most of the following programs can be downloaded from there.
ANTI-VIRUS:
-AVG by Grisoft
-Avira
-Avast
Any *one* of these would probably work well for you! Read the reviews to be sure.
ANTI-SPYWARE:
Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100 percent accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need *at least* two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.
There are several excellent free ones:
-Spybot, Search and Destroy
-Ad-Aware
-Spyware Blaster
-Superantispyware
-Malwarebytes
FIREWALL:
-Comodo
-Online Armor
-SandBoxie
-Sunbelt Personal Firewall (formerly Kerio)
-Zone Alarm
GENERAL CLEANING:
-Ccleaner
HTH!
There is no best one. All have their strengths and weaknesses.
I have used AVG paid and SpyBot for some time now and it’s been fine. I have used all the major ones at some point and all had their quirks and issues.
Keep in mind that having this software is not a replacement for common sense. Going to risky web sites, opening spam mail and using free proxy servers is eventually going to bite you regardless of which one you are using. Because all of the anti virus products have holes and weaknesses. Sooner or later if you constantly go to risky sites and open up spam mail you will get bit.
11 commercial security suites, including high-profile products like Norton Internet Security (Symantec), Internet Security (McAfee) and Smart Security (Eset LLC). Each package was tested against both actual exploits active on the Web as well as others that were modified to represent "threats too new to have been discovered," said the magazine.
Eset’s Smart Security led the list with a score of 72 out of a possible 100, with McAfee’s and Symantec’s suites in second and tied for third, respectively, with 71 and 70 points.
But Consumer Reports’s top honors went to a free three-pack of Avira’s AntiVir antivirus program, Microsoft’s Windows Defender antispyware software and the Spamfighter antispam program.
"These free programs offer the best combination of performance and price. All are recommended," said Consumer Reports in giving the trio its "CR Best Buy" for the category. "[They] could be combined to create a makeshift suite."
Its up to you what you pick. free ones Don’t have Firewall – free ones have to update more then one program- Free ones don’t have other extras that pay Internet Security will have.
Your best virus/worm-prevention strategy is to keep Windows and your antivirus/antispyware/firewall software up-to-date, don’t open e-mail attachments you weren’t expecting (even if they appear to be from someone you know), and avoid file-sharing and other dicey Web sites. This is no guarantee of keeping your PC virus-free, but it will keep the odds in your favor.
according to me nothing is best but they help sometimes . and its not 100% sure that all the viruses are removed when u scan your computer .. so i recommend you have fallow some preventions methods and also to remove a virus manually . just make use of the fallowing articles.

Stay away from free AV’s. I have found over the years that if there free there free for a reason. They have security holes in them or they wouldn’t be free.
AVG free is the worst one out there next to trend micro. AVG free has no root kit protection and trojan mal ware walks right by it. I have tried all the free AV’s at one time or the other. The one thing that is common about them is there security holes.
The best you will get is paid. People on here will tell you that you can keep your computer safe for free. There lying to you. You can’t. Everybody uses there computers differently. The way i use mine’ There is no way i would trust a free program.
Also’ You can get hit with a virus or bug anywhere on the net at any time. Never trust your investment to a free AV.
The best in my book is Kaspersky. The reason i call it the best is because i haven’t had a bug or virus on my machine in over 2 years. I was for ever always getting hit with something when i used a free AV. Kaspersky has the best fire wall you will find outside a corporate version. It’s real time is the best i ever seen. It’s protection is great to. Works good for me.
best out there: Kapersky 2009. highly rated
There really is no best one. Seems like everyone has their favorite. If you just go by the big testing labs, which only test detection, not easy of use, or ram use. The leader right now is G Data. Most people have never heard of it. German software. You can’t go wrong with Norton Internet Security, Kaspersky internet Security, or G Data. Plus there are other good picks. I always recommend downloading the free trial of the the you think you’ll like. Give it a try, I like Kaspersky Internet Security, but had problems with it. Just did not run right on my computer. I know it’s a good program, but not for me. If someone wants complete protection and they just want to put it on and set and forget. I usually put Norton Internet Security. Uses only 8mb of Ram, has strong protection, and a good firewall. If they want to be able to tweak the security software Kaspersky allows a users to set it up anyway they want. You can get good protection from free software but you have to combine at least 3 programs to get even close to want the security Suites cover. Norton Internet Security is best for me, and its rated top in tests and reviews of Security Suites.
