My neighbor asked me if I could help her with her computer problem. She has an HP desktop running windows XP that has become virtually useless due to viruses. It takes forever to do anything and it constantly freezes, and it can’t even be turned off. It has Norton antivirus, but it’s expired and it won’t even run because the thing freezes. The modem activity led shows constant activity (!?), and one can get online. I was thinking that maybe there is an online program that’ll check it and hopefully clean it? (It appears that her relatives also use the computer, and they have used programs downloaded from the internet, including such risky apps like LimeWire)
Any input will be appreciated.

There are many variations of viruses and PC threats on the internet these days. Therefore one can never be too sure as to whether a computer is safe or not?
To ward off any dubious activities and to combat viruses already present on a computer system, I suggest you take a look at:
http://www.pcthreat.com/removers.html
If your system has been infected, you will be informed as to which PC threat is prevalent on the system, and be provided with removal instructions accordingly.
Remember to always keep your antivirus and anti-spyware applications up to date and fully functional.
If I were you, I would reinstall windows. The other respondents are right. That will rid yourself of everything. I just did that recently. Anytime you download something, you’re leaving your computer open for attack. If you download LimeWire, AOL, Yahoo Messenger, or Netscape Navigator, you might as well smash up your computer with a sledgehammer. If I were you, I would get Kaspersky anti-virus. I installed that recently and it kicks butt. It has a superlative firewall, anti-spyware, and anti-virus. It even sends viruses, worms, and Trojans back to the source. Whatever you do, don’t download an anti-virus program from the Internet, if you can help it. I recommend ordering it and then installing it.

Super Anti Spyware its great and its free just google it. Hope that helps.
Use combofix from bleepingcomputer.com, then go download malwarebytes from softpedia.com or cnet.com and use it, then clean the rest of the virus with superantispyware from softpedia.com or superantispyware.com, and for future protection use avira as antivirus and a good firewall such as Online Armor or Outpost Firewall.
Is easy, restart and start tapping the F8 key, use arrows, and the enter key, select safe mode with networking, get free http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php update, do full scan.
Turn off the restore program first, when done, turn it back on..
If norton antivirus expired it’s no good. I’d do a total re-format of the computer and then install both avg free version and zonealarm. As these programs are both free (provided you make sure it’s free version of avg, go to free.grisoft.com) and work together excellently, the computer should then be protected.
Edit: for your reference convenience I set up http://tinyurl.com/reformatreference to redirect to this question.
