I have used Norton Internet Security for yrs. with no problems from virus/malware/spyware.
Just Installed new version, Norton Internet Security 2010, it has not slowed down my system and runs scans and virus definition updates in back ground. I buy the boxed version so to get the CD and a 3 user license for all my lap tops.

I also use Windows Defender from Microsoft, it is free and does not conflict with my Internet Security software: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=435bfce7-da2b-4a6a-afa4-f7f14e605a0d&displayLang=en
The best AV I have ever come across is Microsoft Security Essentials. When someone brings me a computer and I suspect it of having malware I immediately download and install MSE regardless of what protection they currently have. I have seen everything from AVG, Avast, Avira, Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, NOD32 and all of the other big boys miss malware that was caught by MSE. It is free and made by Microsoft. Since they make Windows as well they should know best how to protect it. Download it here and never turn back: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/
It is all opinions. Lately I have been testing the free one from microsoft. It is pretty good and I think I will keep it for now.

some other good free ones are
avira – it is also a favorite to me. The only disadvantage is there is a popup ad everytime it updates

avast – it is also a good one.

avg – it is a good one but personally I do not like the interface. Others will swear by it. You have to watch them, they are tricky as far as trying to switch you to their paid version so read their messages closely and carefuly

I would suggest the AVG free anti virus. It is really effective; I have used it for 3 years or so and not gotten a virus.
