I have had computers for the last 10 years and never used virus protection software. I do use a firewall, but I prefer hardware ones, as stuff like zonealarm just doesn’t work. And as of yet, I have never had a virus/worm/trojan which threatened the data on my PC.
PC World makes out that without McAffee or Norton, you WILL get a virus as SOON as you switch your modem on.

I would first question the validity of your statement.. since without a virus scanner on your computer you would have no way of knowing whether or not you had any malware.. since not all malware is designed with a payload that causes destruction of files…
A backdoor on your system may or may not be detected via your firewall… only if it’s using a program that you have not allowed access.
A firewall will not tell you if you have an email worm and are transmitting it to everyone you know.
Since there are literally thousands of different types of malware… and not even mentioning yet PuPs, which are potentially unwanted programs … and then to go onto spyware and adware which also are not malicious in nature…
The reason to have these security measures is for protection.
The reason you get a flu shot is to hopefully prevent you from getting the flu. Some people still get the flu. Others yell how it gave them the flu. Still people take vitamin C as an added protection and others do not. Does this mean the person who does not take vitamin C will automatically get a cold? no.
Does this mean the person who takes vitamin C is a fool? no.
If you want your computer to be no cleaner than a dirty public bathroom and do not think there’s a virus festering or the potential for one… that’s your issue…
The scams are people who really think there is no difference between antivirus you pay for and those you don’t.
Common sense is the essential backbone of security.

If you’re smart about what you download, you’ll never get a virus.
I haven’t had virus protection.. ever. I got one virus, took care of it myself….
I do use a firewall, they are a must, but virus protection? Just use your head.
